It's true. Grannies do it. But there's more to volunteering than selling cardigans at the local op-shop. Don't get us wrong, we love grannies, cardies and op-shops. But volunteers come from all ages and backgrounds. And they do the most amazing things. Without them, the world would be very different. In a not-very-good way. More please

Stepping through the door at Vibewire

By Gavin
It's a hot summer's afternoon in the city. The warm, thick breeze hangs over me like a towel – but instead of the usual post-lunch lethargy, I feel invigorated. I am steps away from a new world, and I don't even know it yet.

Stepping through the door at the Vibewire office, the temperature increases. It's warmer in here than in the street; and the room is crowded with conversation. For tonight brings together an energetic crop of creative entrepreneurs – young business people determined to turn their creative energies into viable businesses. I am already wishing Vibewire was around 20 years earlier!

Tonight there are a number of talks about new initiatives, including a new course in social entrepreneurship. Afterwards I have the chance to speak with Annie Le Cavalier, newly appointed National Coordinator of Vibewire. I had met her briefly at a coffee morning that we regularly run for marketing and social media people at the Single Origin cafe in Sydney – and she had invited me along to see what Vibewire was all about.

Pretty quickly I realised that there were opportunities for me to help out. I had just been working with a local school student to build out a marketing plan for a charity concert and had enjoyed the experience – and here was an opportunity to do the same: apply my business knowledge and experience in a way that benefits a community.

For me, there was great fun in working with a responsive group – moving quickly from ideas to action. And it was impressive to see how quickly the Vibewire team's efforts had tangible benefits for the young people who were part of their community. And, of course, my involvement continues. Just keep your eyes out for their new website at www.vibewire.org!
