Women and Mentoring – WAM Ltd is a community driven crime prevention initiative operating in the West and inner North suburbs of Melbourne, supporting local women who are facing criminal charges or at risk of offending. WAM empowers women through our program which is built on the foundations of respect, belonging, and social justice. The program aims to encourage and assist women to utilise professional community support services including legal services, through the provision of support by voluntary female mentors from the community. It seeks to foster functional and legal choices and behaviours, assist with rehabilitation where appropriate and reduce the likelihood of re-offending through role-modelling of appropriate behaviours, gentle challenging of anti-social behaviours and reinforcement of positive change. WAM is enthusiastically supported by police, courts, government and community agencies, and operates independently from these organisations.
