About Eastern Emergency Relief Network
EERN makes available furniture and other household goods and (non perishable) food parcels as emergency aid to those in need in the communities of Boroondara, Knox, Monash, Manningham, Maroondah and Whitehorse.
EERN is always in need of good quality second-hand furniture, white goods and other household essentials, non perishable food, financial assistance, and of course, volunteers.
It is operated by a Management Committee made up of representatives from around 150 member agencies, the community at large, and service clubs such as Lions and Rotary.
Member agencies include domestic violence support groups, emergency housing organisations, community information and advice services, Church welfare groups of all denominations, refugee and asylum seeker support, youth groups and addiction recovery programs. These welfare agencies access furniture, household goods, and food and clothing from EERN for their clients.
Clients may have experienced trauma or loss so that they need to move or may not be able to to afford basic living requirements.
There are no paid workers: EERN is run entirely by a dedicated team of over 70 volunteers.
Volunteers undertake a variety of roles with EERN, including driving either the collection truck or van or being the driver's assistant (a "jockey”); working in the warehouse including assisting to help member agencies, their case workers and their needy clients; answering the telephone; sorting household items; doing minor maintenance/repair work, where necessary on furniture; and doing electrical checking and tagging in accordance with Australian Standards requirements.
Most volunteers work one morning per week to enable EERN to provide our much needed service to the needy.
