Wonga Park Farmers' Market

  • Location: Wonga Park, VIC
  • Category: Community Services

Set in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, and held at Wonga Park Primary School, one kilometre from the Yarra River, the Wonga Park Farmers' Market brings Yarra Valley and Victorian produce to local shoppers.

The Market is run as a fundraiser by the School and is held on the fourth Saturday of every month, except for January, running from 9am to 12pm. It provides an opportunity for volunteers who are seeking weekend volunteering opportunities.

Wonga Park Farmers Market stallholders offer fresh fruit and veggies, authentic sourdough breads, free range eggs, honey, cheeses, baked treats, preserves, Yarra Valley roasted coffee, lamb, artisan smallgoods, hay, take home meals, food plants, flowers, and food to eat on site. There are also varied children's activities.

The Market has wider community benefits. Patrons can learn the story behind the food as well as supporting local farmers and small producers. Buying direct from the grower or the maker provides a greater connection to the seasons and to how the food is produced. It cuts down on food miles at the same time.

Volunteer helpers will assist with the many jobs involved in running the market, such as setting up and packing up the market, and assisting on the school-run stalls, such as the BBQ and the sale of apples and preserves.
