We are a grassroots charity supporting children in out-of-home care and escaping domestic violence. Our objective is to bring happiness to the lives of children and youth in out-of-home care and crisis accommodation across Western Australia. We believe that every child has the right to be happy, to have a sense of belonging, self-worth, and to feel that they are cared about. At Operation Sunshine WA our key initiative is the provision of Sunshine Packs, these are emergency care packs that are provided to children and youth at the time of entering out-of-home care and crisis accommodation in order to create a sense of self-worth, restore dignity, reduce the isolation experienced, and give comfort at time of extreme trauma. When a child enters care they often arrive with little or no belongings, in many cases with only the clothes they are wearing at the time of being removed from their family environment. They come from situations of trauma and abuse, and being placed in an unfamiliar environment with strangers only compounds the isolation and disconnection they experience. Providing them with a Sunshine Packs helps to minimise the disadvantage they are exposed to by giving them a sense of ownership, self worth and value. Approximately 1,100 children enter out-of-home care across Western Australia each year, it is our goal to be able to provide a Sunshine Pack to every child entering care.
