Gasworks Arts Park

Situated in Albert Park, Victoria Gasworks is 3 kms from the Melbourne CBD. It is an arts precinct housed in renovated industrial buildings on what was the site of the South Melbourne gas production plant. About half the original 6 metre high brick wall still surrounds the park giving the impression of an urban oasis. The Park is a leash free dog exercise area, and includes a children's playground, picnic tables, barbeques and the Gasworks Cafe. The arts facilities include a 190 seat theatre, a studio performance space seating up to 60, community access tuition spaces, a darkroom, sculpture studio, painting studios, ceramics studios, and a gallery. The precinct has 14 studio artist tenants. Gasworks artistic policy is founded on inclusion and ownership by the local community. The precinct is owned by the City of Port Phillip, and is leased by Gasworks Arts Inc., a community based nonprofit, which presents an annual program of festivals, events, exhibitions and performances. When not used in our own program Gasworks facilities are available for hire by arts, community, or commercial organisations. These facilities include the theatre, rehearsal studio, access spaces, darkroom, and the artist’s studios.
