Connections Community College

Connections Inc. is a not-for-profit and registered charity supporting individuals in the community centred in Caboolture but including Sunshine Coast to North Brisbane who have a mental health diagnosis. Connections Inc was founded in 2003 by a group of community minded people who were keenly aware that that there was a need for the support of adults who had a mental health diagnosis. Sixteen years on, Connections Inc remains true to this founding vision, to Improve Mental Health in the Community by providing relevant evidence-based learning and life skill development programs that assist in the facilitation of recovery. It does this by supporting people to be well resourced and make informed choices regarding all aspects of their individual support. Recently, Connections Inc recognised that there is a need for a Flexible Learning Centre (FLC) in the South-East Queensland region of Moreton Bay. FLC’s differ from mainstream schools as they have a very specific school population (20-90 students) with higher staff ratios (1 FTE to five students). The young people who attend FLC’s have been and/or feel they are excluded and disenfranchised from mainstream education supports and services. In response to this, FLC’s are more focused on relative, relational and responsive practice that caters to individual needs and circumstances. Connections Inc’s proposed FLC’s point of difference will be a focus of Improving Mental Health in the Community by engaging and offering youth aged between 12 and 18 who have a mental health condition, holistic well-being programs that focus on psychological, emotional, social and life skill development in alignment with and to the Australian National Curriculum. This Flexible Learning Centre will be called, Connections Community College.
