The Dr Edward Koch Foundation was established in July 1995 to improve the health and well being of North Queenslanders. A board of directors manages the foundation which was registered as a public company with limited liability on 26 March 1997. Its first project, the suicide prevention handbook was approved in the same year and the way was set for the foundation to develop future projects. In 2014, His excellency, the honourable Paul De jersey AC governor of Queensland, became the foundations patron. The foundation's main focus is mental health issues and prevention. It chairs the FNQ Suicide Prevention Task force which was formed to implement, support and promote strategies to reduce suicide and self harm. The foundation has fully qualified instructors who deliver mental health first aid courses to individuals wishing to learn how to assist people experiencing mental health problems. In any year in Australia at least 6 people die of suicide and one in five people experience mental illness. These statistics are alarming and the foundation's focus is to reduce these statistics. "Suicide Prevention is Everyone's Business" and the foundation will pursue its mission to have a mental health aider in every business in North Queensland.
