Healthy Cities Onkaparinga (HCO) (formerly Healthy Cities Noarlunga) is a non-government organisation advocating for collaborative health promotion. It was established in 1987 as one of three cities to test the European Healthy Cities model in Australia when the Australian Community Health Association received funding from the Australian Government to pilot the World Health Organization’s Healthy Cities concept in three cities (1987–89) Canberra, Illawarra and Noarlunga. It was followed by a funded network project (1990–92). During 1991, a review of the management of the project was undertaken and Healthy Cities Noarlunga became a non-government incorporated organisation with a constitution that stipulates that there must be a majority of community members on the Management Committee. In 2008 Healthy Cities Noarlunga changed its name to Healthy Cities Onkaparinga in line with local government boundary changes and to better reflect the area of our activities. Healthy Cities Onkaparinga is a founding member of the Alliance for Healthy Cities (AFHC) in the Asia-Pacific region and also a founding member of the Australian Chapter of the Alliance.
