Cereal for Coffee

On a typical day, three Aussie school children in every class will arrive at school hungry or without having eaten breakfast. Hungry children have difficulty with learning, social interactions and physical demands. Teachers report that these children: • are more likely to find it difficult to concentrate (73%); • can be lethargic (66%); • may have learning difficulties (54%); and • can exhibit behavioural problems (52%). It is another burden on a child already struggling with issues at home, which could be poverty, neglect or abuse. It is happening to Brisbane’s primary school children every day. Cereal for Coffee Ltd (C4C) tries to do something about these heartbreaking stories by working with Brisbane schools and chaplains to feed kids who aren’t fed at home. Formed in September 2015, C4C’s goal is to reduce the number of primary school kids coming to class each day without breakfast. We are a small charity, registered with the ACNC, who are reliant on volunteer efforts and donations to help our communities. Since forming, through much needed donations, grants and our annual fundraising campaign (including where people donate boxes of cereal for free coffee from local cafes – hence our name!) we have donated more than 5,350 boxes of cereal and a massive amount of milk, bread and spreads to about 40 state schools and community support groups in suburbs including Mount Gravatt, Yarrabilba, Capalaba and Coolwynpin.
