Citizen Advocates are matched and supported in one on one advocacy relationships with a person with intellectual disability. They make a real difference to the lives of isolated people who may otherwise only have paid staff in their lives.
To commence this role is a process that may take a significant lead time following training and matching with a client. Initial meetings may be held remotely and face to face contact would be very limited initially and would take place safely within COVID regulations
The citizen advocate and the person with disability under guidance from the Coordinator determine how they will best work together . The advocacy relationship is free to develop without control from others.
The commitment on the part of the volunteer is ideally long term.
- Making a real difference to a vulnerable person.
- Flexibility in commitment.
