Ten Lives Cat Centre As the largest cat centre in Tasmania, we take care of the thousands of cats and kittens every year that pass through the centre annually. In our peak period known as kitten season (Oct-March), we have one cat or kitten surrendered every 30 minutes during intake time. There’s a mountain of jobs to do every day to give them their best chance at finding their forever home. We need active and hardworking volunteers who can donate their time in the mornings and/or afternoons to help feed our kitties and keep their environments clean and comfortable.
The Opportunity Our Animal Care Assistants help with feeding cats and kittens as per dietary requirements and cleaning litter trays, cat cages and manning the washing machines (which never stop!). We also rely on our volunteers to perform any general animal care tasks as set by the Supervisor, such as reporting all animal health and behavioural observations to the Supervisor and on the daily health charts. While we receive many applications from animal studies students wanting to learn about shelter operations and develop their animal care skills - we also look for volunteers who are as crazy about cats as we are and want to roll up their sleeves and get busy. It’s not all rubber gloves and litter trays however…there is plenty of time to have some one-on-one time with the kitties in our care – which we encourage everyone to do as much as possible 😊
The Impact It’s hard to emphasise enough how important volunteer contributions are to the centre. Quite simply, the more hands we have, the more cats and kittens we can look after, reducing their number of days in care - helping them to find their forever homes as soon as possible. In addition to the activities at the centre, you are also doing your part in making a huge difference for the community and environment in Tasmania for our unique wildlife and improving the welfare of cats and kittens.
