Thanks to support from NRMA Insurance, CVA will be helping to plant 300 Koala food trees to expand the Moripo Park Research Plantation (40min drive west of Port Macquarie). The 2 year old plantation contains 600 low-canopy food trees and is a research site for koala nutrition and tree management, harvested specifically to feed koalas in care at the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital. The Hospital is the World’s first Koala Hospital and has been at the forefront of Koala care and conservation since 1973. Koala populations in NSW are vulnerable, with some reports suggesting local extinction may occur by 2050 without immediate action. In the wake of the 2019-2020 bushfires (and the floods that followed) the work of the hospital is more important now than ever before, with record numbers of koalas in need of care. Through this project you can make a difference by planting a tree (or more!) to help provide food security for koalas in care which will help strengthen wild populations and ensure the Koala's long survival in NSW.
