Organisation description: Community & Arts Centre located in Altona providing a diverse range of arts, community and sustainability programs and projects.

Job description: Louis Joel Arts & Community runs a monthly repair café supporting community members to get a range of household items fixed at no cost including small electrical items, non-electrical items, laptops and computers, and clothing and textiles.

The program runs on the first Saturday of the month between 12pm and 3pm.

Repairs are conducted by skilled volunteer repairers with repair cafes supported by admin volunteers who assist with admin tasks on the day.

The Repair Café helps divert waste from landfill and e-waste streams through repairing or mending damaged items to extend their life.

Key Responsibilities and Duties :

Repairers:

  • Diagnosing faults and repair of items brought in by visitors to the repair cafe
  • Welcoming and chatting with community members
  • Sharing knowledge of ‘how things work’
  • Identifying equipment and consumables needs

Café Support Volunteers:

  • Welcoming repair café visitors and managing sign in process
  • Matching visitors with repairers according to appointment times and items requiring repair
  • Documenting repairs including taking ‘fixed’ photos
  • Assisting repairers where required with any materials and equipment needs.

Location: 5 Sargood St Altona

Skills:

  • Skills in mending or fixing (Repairers only)
  • Reliability as a team member
  • Friendly approach and interest in meeting new people

Time required: 3 hours once a month

Commitment required: Able to attend minimum of four repair cafes a year.
