Seeking kind and compassionate people, with resilience and a desire to provide comfort to older people at end of life. Some older people don’t have family or friends who can be with them in their final moments. The role of the NODAC Volunteer is to hold vigil with residents at this final stage. Vigil activities might include having conversations, holding the resident’s hand, reading aloud from their favourite books, and providing a calming environment through music and lighting. A vigil will commence once a medical assessment determines the resident requires end-of-life care. Volunteers will take part in three hour vigil shifts however shorter shifts may be arranged depending on volunteer and/or resident’s family’s availability. These vigils are scheduled until the resident passes away.
