Passenger Guide - Puffing Billy Railway

The Boroondara Volunteer Resource Centre is advertising on behalf of Puffing Billy Railway.

Puffing Billy Railway is a perfectly preserved steam train that’s been operating since 1900, capturing the spirit of the steam age in all its charming glory. We have stood the test of time being preserved, restored, and maintained by passionate people and championed by the local community.  Volunteers put the life into our living museum, supporting our efforts to preserve and operate our heritage railway.

What's involved?

You will meet your Passenger Services Crew for the morning huddle to hear from your Station Master and the plans for the day. From here you will head into your designated area and prepare for the crowds to arrive.

No two days are ever the same at Puffing Billy Railway, however, it is guaranteed you will be the welcoming face our visitors are happy to see! You will help them with information, support them in finding different areas of the railway, and be happy to have photos or chat with visitors from all over the world!

Our Passenger Guides generally move into Conductor roles and travel on the trains with our passengers, providing safety briefings and keeping everyone safe whilst travelling between stations. You can also move into the Station Master role from your role as a Conductor. Our wonderful Station Masters are responsible for the entire crew, keeping our timetables running and in order!

Come along to our Information Night on Thursday 5th December from 5-6pm (online) where you can learn all about volunteering on our railway and meet some of our crew. We hope to see you there!

We're looking for volunteer guides that are friendly and punctual, with an interest in the Dandenong Ranges and all the area has to offer. Prior qualifications are not required, and role-specific training is provided. Culturally and linguistically diverse volunteers are encouraged to apply.

Puffing Billy Railway is located at the end of the Belgrave metro line or an easy 40km drive from Melbourne GPO (free car parking is available).
