At our rehab centre, The Cat Cottage, we provide long term housing in a semi-rural surrounded by open space paddocks, trees and wildlife. The cats live in group pens about the size of a large living room that feature platforms at different levels, ladders and branches to climb on, hidey holes and soft blankies to snuggle into, and all kind of sensory enrichment including toys, cat grass and calming music.

We don't necessarily need volunteers with shelter experience, we will train you in everything you need to know. But we do need hard working, committed volunteers who are in it for the long haul, who understand consistency and predictability is key to animal rehabilitation. We provide training in cleaning cat living areas without risk, reading their body language and knowing which cats to allow extra space versus which would like you to engage with them.

Domestic-born cats are very different to wild-born cats, socialisation for these guys isn't a matter of days or weeks, its a matter of months or years. The Cottage is their home, with us as their caretakers. Many are not handle-able and will remain that way for some time, if your interest in volunteering is more directed towards patting and engaging with cats our cats most likely won't meet your expectations.

We consider cat behaviour to be a complex spectrum from social / friendly / domesticated to full blown feral, with multiple stages in between. We work with all levels and do not discriminate, we do not euthanise the most scared or most aggressive as is common in animal welfare sadly, we only euthanise when the cats' health, mental health or a combination of both is to the point they're suffering and there's nothing we can do to ease that for them.

Working with these cats poses very little risk to our volunteers due to the cats' living spaces allowing them to withdraw from us as we tend to their needs around them, and the training we provide volunteers.

For many of the cats we take in, to start to rehabilitate they first need to overcome trauma they've experienced at the hand of humans. Once they've learnt we're not here to harm them, rehabilitation can begin, and is done simply through consistent, safe exposure to humans via our volunteers being in the same space as the cats while they clean and go about cottage shift duties. We enter the pens daily with positive offerings of food, clean water and hygiene maintenance and over time this starts to build trust in the cats.

The most rewarding part of what we do is the transformations we see; watching a terrified animal blossom into a happy and relaxed little character is truly amazing!
