About Blind Citizens Australia Blind Citizens Australia is the national representative organisation of Australians who are blind or vision impaired. Our mission is to inform, connect and empower Australians who are blind or vision impaired and the broader community. About Blind Citizens News Blind Citizens News is BCA’s flag ship publication. Its purpose is to inform, entertain and provoke discussion and debate. Its readership is very broad and extends throughout Australia and beyond. Readers includes people who are blind or vision-impaired, professionals working in the area of blindness and vision-impairment and the broader community. As the editor of Blind Citizens News, you will be responsible for content development, consistency of style and editing of material.

About you You are someone who loves words, whether it's writing them or reading them. You are comfortable expressing your creativity through writing and willing to encourage and support others to do the same. You have excellent attention to detail and are an efficient proofreader. You are someone who values and respects time-frames and thrives on meeting them. You have also got a good grasp on technology, especially Microsoft Word and e-mail. You have a strong commitment to the work of BCA, its members, and to the ethics, principles, practices and culture of the organisation. The stuff you need to know This is a volunteer position. The hours will vary greatly throughout the year. Some weeks, there may be little to do but others, there may be a substantial amount, so flexibility is key. You will be overseeing the creation of three editions of Blind Citizens News each calendar year. This will involve writing the editorial column, sourcing and liaising with contributors, editing articles, and compiling the issue for production. You will have support from within BCA to identify content opportunities, provide direction and guidance and assist in the setting of time frames.

Duty Statement • Position Title: Blind Citizens News - Editor • Duration: Ongoing, with a one-year minimum commitment • Commitment: Hours will vary from week to week, it is estimated each edition takes approximately 35-45 hours to compile, this work will be spread across 3-4 months. • Renumeration: This is a volunteer position, BCA may reimburse you for any costs incurred with prior agreement. • Reporting Relationships: The position reports to the Communications Coordinator • It is a requirement that all BCA staff and volunteers hold a current police check. Key Selection Criteria

  1. Highly developed written and oral communication skills.
  2. Previous experience writing and compiling written communications for publication.
  3. The ability to meet timeframes and support others to do so.
  4. Strong grasp of technology, especially Microsoft Word, Outlook, and any required assistive technology.
  5. The ability to network and build relationships with potential contributors and readers.
