Become a friend and ally for someone with disability

Citizen Advocacy Perth (Supported by Volunteer Melville!)

Established in 1980, Citizen Advocacy has been connecting people in the local community for over 40 years. We are a not-for-profit organisation funded by the federal government, Department of Social Services (DSS) under the National Disability Advocacy Program (NDAP).

We bring together people from all walks of life to be a voice, companion and champion for someone with intellectual disability.

About the opportunity

Volunteers are matched with a person with intellectual disability who has similar interests and time availability, allowing them to form a unique and meaningful relationship centered around friendship.

As a volunteer, you have the flexibility to shape your involvement around your schedule, so whether you choose to dedicate an hour a week or engage more casually, you can make a difference in a way that fits your life.

You can engage in a variety of activities with the person you are matched with, such as helping them develop life skills, participating in recreational outings, assisting with daily tasks, or simply being a friendly and supportive presence in their lives.

We provide training and ongoing support giving you access to workshops, events and opportunities to connect with other volunteers.

While no special experience or qualifications are needed, volunteering as an advocate requires:

  • compassion and empathy
  • good communication skills
  • patience and flexibility
  • commitment to inclusion
  • respect for diversity - abilities, backgrounds, and communication styles
  • reliability and dedication.

We're looking for dedicated individuals, aged 18 and above, ready for a long-term commitment to advocacy. This role is not suitable for students seeking short-term experience or placements. Consistency and dedication to the role is essential, as advocacy often requires ongoing support and involvement.

Make a difference

By giving your time, you can help open doors, create opportunities, and empower the person you are matched with.

Unique bonds can develop between partners creating long-lasting friendships built on trust, understanding and genuine care.

Your efforts can help promote a society where everyone is valued, respected, and empowered to reach their fullest potential.
