OzHarvest Food Rescue Assistant - Perth

OzHarvest, Australia's leading food rescue organisation, is looking for fresh faces to help nourish the Perth community!
OzHarvest WA is a not-for-profit, for-impact food rescue organisation. With a fleet of 8 yellow vans, we rescue quality, surplus food from commercial outlets and deliver this food at no cost to charitable agencies feeding people in need across the Perth and Peel regions.
We are currently looking for magnificent people to join our Volunteer team to assist our Food Rescue team with getting good food to good people.
- Are you physically fit and able to lift heavy loads consistently?
- Are you reliable and able to commit to regular shifts on Fridays?
SUITABLE APPLICANTS WILL HAVE:

- Ability to complete online Manual Handling and Safe Food Handling modules and willingness to learn how to use our food collection phone app

The Food Rescue Van Assistant role (one volunteer per van per day, for a full day shift) will see you assist our OzHarvest Food Rescue Drivers in collecting quality surplus food from our generous food donors and redistributing it to our local charitable organisations who provide food relief to vulnerable people across the Perth and Peel regions. This is a physically demanding full-day shift which involves getting in and out of our vans on multiple occasions; and lifting crates of produce into and out of a van.
THE ROLE WILL INCLUDE:
- The physical collection of food from donors which requires frequently and repeatedly lifting crates of produce (crates can often be around 15kg in weight)
- Actively following Food Safety and Manual Handling Guidelines while weighing and loading rescued food into the van as well as unloading and distributing the food to charitable agencies; maintaining a clean and safe vehicle and working environment
- Weighing donated food and logging details of volume/type of food collected in our smart phone app
- Unloading and distribution of food to recipient agencies
- Upholding safe driving practices and ensuring vehicle is properly maintained
- Liaising with food donors, recipient charities, and fellow OzHarvest drivers and volunteers
- Being an Ambassador for OzHarvest and represent us in a positive manner in all dealing with donors, recipient charity staff and clients, and the general public.
- Other volunteering roles may arise from time to time, including community events/market stalls, fundraising and education roles.
