What is Citizen Advocacy

Citizen Advocacy is a not-for-profit, community-based organisation funded by the federal government, Department of Social Services (DSS) under the National Disability Advocacy Program (NDAP).

We bring together people from all walks of life to champion and empower someone with intellectual disability.

About the opportunity

Volunteers are matched with a person with intellectual disability who has similar interests and time availability, allowing them to form a unique and meaningful relationship centered around friendship.

As a volunteer, you have the flexibility to shape your involvement around your schedule, and make a difference in a way that fits your life.

You can engage in a variety of activities with the person you are matched with, such as helping them develop life skills, socialising together, assisting with daily tasks, and being a friendly and supportive presence in their lives. We provide training and ongoing support giving you access to workshops, events and opportunities to connect with other volunteers.

While no special experience or qualifications are needed, volunteering as an advocate requires:

  • good listening and communication skills
  • patience and flexibility
  • compassion and reliability
  • commitment to diversity and inclusion

We're looking for dedicated individuals, aged 18 and above, ready for a long-term commitment to advocacy. This role is not suitable for students or anyone seeking short-term experience or work placements.

Make a difference Unique bonds can develop between partners creating long-lasting friendships built on trust, understanding and genuine care.

By giving your time, you can help open doors, create opportunities, and empower the person you are matched with. Your efforts can help promote a society where everyone is valued, respected, and empowered to reach their fullest potential.

Enhance your communication skills, learn about different perspectives, and develop a deeper sense of empathy and understanding.

This isn't just a role, it's a commitment to building meaningful relationships and making a real difference in your community.
