Assistant Conductor – Inner West Symphony Orchestra (Voluntary)

The Inner West Symphony Orchestra (IWSO) is looking for an enthusiastic and committed Assistant Conductor to join our team on a one year fixed term basis. This is a great opportunity for an aspiring conductor to develop their skills and receive mentorship while supporting the artistic and operational direction of a community orchestra.

About Us

The IWSO is a community orchestra of 60+ members in the heart of Melbourne’s Inner West. Our vision is to enrich the cultural life of our community with exceptional, engaging and affordable live music experiences. We typically perform three large scale concerts a year (400+ audience per concert), and also provide smaller ensemble performances within our local community.

Role

As our Assistant Conductor you will work closely with the IWSO’s Music Director and orchestra members to support concerts and rehearsals. This is a hands on role and a great opportunity to be part of a collaborative team that loves bringing live classical music to the West of Melbourne.

Responsibilities

  • Conducting: Lead performances and occasional rehearsals as required, including pre-concert warm-ups and smaller ensembles.
  • Rehearsal Support: Support the Music Director during rehearsals, give feedback and lead sectionals as needed.
  • Collaborative Leadership: Lead by example and warmth, creating a positive and supportive environment for our musicians to excel.
  • Music: Assist with score study and orchestral parts (as required by Musical Director).
  • Community: Support the orchestra’s outreach activities by attending events and public engagement activities.

Key Requirements

  • Musical: Advanced knowledge of orchestral repertoire and conducting experience.
  • Leadership: Ability to lead and motivate musicians in a collaborative manner.
  • Communication: Excellent communication and the ability to convey musical ideas to a group
  • Flexibility: Proactive individual who is able to adapt to the orchestra’s needs.
  • Love of Community Music: Alignment with IWSO’s vision to make music inclusive and to connect with our community.

Time Commitments

Attend weekly evening rehearsals (Monday evenings, depending on the orchestra’s schedule).

Availability for concerts, occasional meetings and planning sessions.
