Background

Chatting is such a simple concept but so important for mental and physical health. Loneliness can seriously impact a person’s sense of wellbeing and cause a range of disorders including anxiety and depression.

The Ashburton Community Centre is seeking a friendly volunteer on fortnightly Monday evenings 7pm – 9pm to co-host Chatty Books

This would involve chatting with local community members about books they are reading and enjoying. Chatty Books is a joint ACC and Library initiative and will be held in The Ashy Foyer between the Ashburton Library and the Ashburton Community Centre.

Unlike regular bookclubs, where members read the same book and “compare notes” and share opinions, Chatty books will be open on a drop-in basis for community members to connect with whatever reading materials or media they are enjoying at the time.

Chatty Books participants might be people on their own, in a couple, with a friend, carers, people with a disability, mums with new babies, students, parents with babies and kids, grandparents, people of all ages and from all demographics. Everyone is welcome!

  • Set up The Ashy Foyer space in readiness (this will involve moving light furniture and tables on wheels and putting out chairs) and setting up tea/coffee facilities
  • Be at the Ashy Foyer location 15 minute prior to start time
