Do you want to help conserve the stunning environment of the Dandenong Ranges?

Winding on a mountain track from Belgrave to Gembrook, Puffing Billy Railway is a perfectly preserved steam train that’s been operating since 1900, capturing the spirit of the steam age in all its charming glory. As part of the Way & Works Branch of the railway, you can assist with the environmental management of our rail corridor as an Environmental Team Member.

Environmental volunteers support our team with revegetation, pest animal control, native wildlife management, and maintaining healthy waterways alongside the railway. This is a great opportunity to meet like-minded friends, team up with Landcare groups, ‘Friends of’ groups and corporate volunteers that assist with managing the natural vista of the railway.

You'll learn more about local flora and fauna and gain new skills working outdoors. Plus, you'll benefit from the physical wellbeing and stress reduction that comes with being in nature. Green thumbs (and prior qualifications) are not required. All training is provided. Just bring your enthusiasm for the great outdoors and a willingness to learn how to use the tools of the trade!

Puffing Billy Railway is located at the end of the Belgrave metro line or an easy 40km drive from Melbourne GPO (free car parking is available). If you’re ready to build lifelong friendships, contribute to the community and be part of living history – we'd love to have you on board! Come join the award-winning team of volunteers that have made Puffing Billy Railway the much-loved tourist attraction it is today.
