In today's technology driven world, there are pressures on our youth that we as adults never had to deal with.

And unfortunately, despite living in one of the most beautiful natural places in the world, less and less kids are getting to experience the value, inner-calm and self-confidence that comes from being competent when outdoors in wild places.

Old Beach Scouts are looking for an Assistant Leader for 2hrs each Wednesday night during school terms, 6pm – 8pm, plus on occasional weekend hikes and camps.

Leaders and Assistant Leaders plan and run activities based around a set of educational goals such as first aid, camping, map-reading and weather skills, water, bush and fire safety; plus the value of planning and teamwork when on outdoor adventures. Leaders and Assistant Leaders also 'hand over' the planning and running of activities to the kids on a regular basis to help develop self-direction, teamwork and leadership skills.

We have 10 boys/girls aged 11-15 plus children waiting to join because we cannot meet the right ratio of adults to children. The more the merrier, so this is a volunteer opportunity you could do with a friend or partner.

We also do approx 3 2-day camps every year and a couple of 5km - 15km hikes. It's a great way to have fun and explore some of Tassie's beautiful scenery.

We need volunteers who are reliable, attentive, cheerful, encouraging and are comfortable talking to kids. Adults who can command respect but can also be goofy (don’t worry we can show you that!). Please note you do not have to have children of your own to be good at this! This role would look perfect on the resume of anyone hoping to work in child, outdoor or environmental education.

Assistant Leaders are provided with approximately 40hrs of online training plus two training weekends that can be done at the same time as being with the Scouts. Scouts has a strict ‘two-deep’ leadership policy where no adult is left alone with children.

We guarantee the kids will inspire you and the role will be deeply rewarding. And it's really, really fun!
