The aim of the 24/7 National Support Line is to help reduce the isolation and stigma often associated with alcohol and other drug use. Respect and value the difference between individuals and recognise there is no one 'right' way. Volunteers aim to help the family member work out strategies for looking after themselves and the other family members who are impacted by another’s alcohol and drug use. More important is the ability to listen without making judgements. Encourage the caller to engage in other support services and education programs that FDS offers.

We do not counsel people We do not give advice We are not drug and alcohol experts We listen We empathise We give people time

Some benefits of volunteering for FDS: Learn and apply practical skills Enhanced self-awareness Opportunity to give back to your community Ongoing support and education in your work with FDS Telephone shifts from your own home
