Nominations must be submitted through a State member of Parliament. Appointees must complete a three month justice of the peace training course before appointment, and ongoing training is available.
An applicant must also satisfy the following criteria;
Australian citizen with minimum 12 months in WA.
Enrolled on the State Electoral roll.
Of good character and reputation.
Demonstrate a willingness and capacity to fulfill all the duties of a JP when called upon.
Not insolvent under administration.

JPs carry out a wide range of official administrative and judicial duties in the community. JPs are called upon by the WA Police to sign search warrants and authorises the issuing of summonses. The administrative tasks include witnessing affidavits and documents such as wills and statutory declarations. Prefer someone who is retired or semi retired
