Provide companionship and social support We provide a range of support programs for socially isolated older people who live independently in the community through three services. Volunteers provide social support and interaction to enable Wesley clients to stay engaged or reconnect with their personal interests. Opportunities include:

  • companionship and social support (one-to-one or group basis such as movie or lunch groups, pet visits)
  • facilitate group outings and activities, including people from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds
  • participate in special interest groups such as gardening and computer skills
  • assist with administration, training and recruitment of volunteers
  • facilitate a special interest group over the telephone with our Telelink program.

Become a homesharer The Homeshare program matches older householders, who are looking for help and companionship around the home, with people who are able to provide support in return for accommodation. The householder provides a bedroom and shared facilities, and the homesharer provides around 10 hours a week of companionship, practical assistance and security of another person around the home. Homesharers also contribute to household expenses such as utilities.

Provide respite for carers of older people We offer a day respite program to full-time carers of older people. Volunteers are needed to provide these short breaks for carers, spending two to three hours a week or fortnight with the person being cared for in conversation, sharing interests and activities, or going on a local outing.

Help out at our activity group centres We have three centres offering planned activities for older people in their local communities: Linlithgow in East Ivanhoe, St Mark’s in Chadstone and Melba Club in Healesville. These centres provide opportunities for clients to take part in planned recreational activities and outings, and enjoy meals together. Volunteer work can vary slightly between centres, depending on each program’s needs. These volunteer opportunities include:

  • companionship and support
  • kitchen activities such as food preparation and serving
  • facilitating games, exercise and activities such as craft and painting
  • assisting with special group outings and events
  • providing transport
  • gardening
  • administration assistance
