Derby History Group

The Derby History Group was formed in 2006 by a group of people interested in the preservation and display of artefacts previously on display in The Derby Tin Centre Shanty Town complex. This complex had been sold and was soon to be dismantled. The local residents did not want to lose this collection which include mining, school and social history items relevant to the history of the local area. The collection is now housed in the old Derby school building, which is owned and maintained by Dorset Council. Visitor numbers average around 4000 a year, coming from every state and territory plus in the last 12 months, from 26 other nations. We aim to be open every day with the exception of Good Friday, Christmas Day and New Years Day, however this depends on the availability of volunteers. In the past 12 months we were closed for an additional 35 days due to no volunteers - ill health, holidays, and family responsibilities all play a part in this. Our hours are 10am - 4 pm during the summer, 11am until 2pm in the winter, when visitor numbers drop dramatically. We are self funded, entry is by donation and our visitors are very generous. We have worked closely with Arts Tasmania in the past, in particular the roving Curator Program.
