Karawatha Forest Protection Society Inc

We are a small organisation. Nearly wholly reliant on the couple of thousand dollars grant from the BCC . We meet 6 times a year for a couple of hours. In the in between times we have activities such as walks in the forest at different times of the day, talks to visiting school groups, information stall at different markets and environmental occasions. The Society has been in operation since 1989 and since then has aided the BCC in the purchase of most of the 1,200 hectares as well as improving the facilities and welfare of the conservation area. Our website & Facebook page will give a good picture of our activities. Our name has Protection in it. We have been very involved in keeping the habitat as free as possible from Introduced pests e.g. goats and certain weed species; free from human degradation activities such as mountain biking, rail and power lines; and free from more service utilities demanded from Councils. As well we promoted and worked with the BCC for the building of a Discovery Centre in the forest. It is in place now and is extremely well used by the public. The Society is perpetually on the lookout and working with the BCC to find and acquire adjacent pieces of land that would enhance the ecological value of the Forest. We have a small nominal working committee with a couple of hundred people on our mailing list.
