National Communication Museum

The National Communication Museum (NCM) is a brand-new museum in Hawthorn, based in a refurbished exchange building opening in late September 2024. Situated on the lands of the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people, NCM acknowledges that communication technologies have a long history here, far longer than European occupation and exhibitions will be developed to reflect this. This brand-new not-for-profit museum sits in an emerging cultural and STEAM precinct alongside neighbouring Swinburne University of Technology and Hawthorn Arts Centre. The museum hosts an array of material artefacts and technologies, developed and designed in response to one of the fundamental drivers of our humanity: the need to communicate and connect. Designed by award winning architects Carr Design, visitors to the National Communication Museum will explore the power of communication and the technologies that enable the creation and transformation of communities. The National Communications Museum (NCM) is the custodian of the significant Heritage Telecommunications Limited (HTL) collection that spans over 150 years of Australian telecommunications history. A state-of-the-art warehouse facility in Dandenong South houses the central collection of material artefacts and technologies. The main store combines a traditional warehouse infrastructure with complex and specialised storage areas apable of housing this diverse collection.
