Albany Hospice was opened in November 1989, after a study indicated a need to supplement services already provided in the area. Today's Hospice was opened in 2001 and operates as a private hospice in association with other palliative care providers and public services in the area. A new Hospice is currently being built and will open late in 2015. This new building will double the current Hospice capacity. The Hospice aims are to provide the highest possible level of total care and relief of unpleasant symptoms; to treat all people with respect, courtesy and dignity; to involve patients and families in their care and treatment decisions; to meet the emotional, social, and spiritual needs of patients, families and friends during their stay and to provide support for family and friends in the bereavement period.
