Finance Officer

Key responsibilities include: We are seeking a suitably qualified and experienced Volunteer Treasurer to join the Board of a not-for-profit organisation supporting patients and families affected by chronic illness. This is a key governance role responsible for overseeing the financial integrity, compliance, and sustainability of the organisation.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee and review the organisation’s financial records, including bookkeeping, budgets, and financial reporting
- Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting to the Board and relevant regulatory bodies
- Provide oversight of cash flow, expenditure, and financial planning in line with the organisation’s objectives
- Ensure compliance with all relevant accounting standards, legal requirements, and not-for-profit governance obligations
- Support the annual budgeting process and financial forecasting
- Liaise with external auditors and assist in the preparation and auditing of financial statements
- Provide strategic financial advice to the Board to support sustainable growth and service delivery
- Monitor internal financial controls and recommend improvements where necessary
Selection Criteria:

Must be a qualified and currently practising or experienced accountant (CPA, CA, or equivalent)

Demonstrated experience in auditing or reviewing financial statements and organisational books

Previous experience working with not-for-profit organisations, preferably in the health or patient advocacy sector

Strong understanding of governance, compliance, and financial accountability in the not-for-profit context

Ability to provide strategic financial guidance at Board level

High level of integrity, attention to detail, and commitment to transparency Desirable Experience:

Experience in patient advocacy organisations or community health-related not-for-profits

Familiarity with charitable or incorporated association reporting requirements in Australia

Previous Board or Treasurer experience in a volunteer capacity. This is a voluntary governance position requiring a high level of professionalism, commitment, and expertise. The Treasurer will play a critical role in ensuring the organisation remains financially responsible and well-positioned to deliver its mission of supporting patients and families in the community.
