How you can help in this role?

  • Identify the needs of patients and provide food and beverages or reading material to clients.

  • Engage patients and/or family/carers in conversation while also being alert to the clients need for peace and quiet.

  • Work in a busy clinical environment closely and convey any concerns/support needed or notify oncology nurse if urgent attention required.

  • On morning shifts collect food from the kitchen and follow instructions from Oncology Staff.

Impact on clients:

By volunteering in this role you will be providing an important service to community members and their families undergoing treatment for a range of diseases including cancer.

Further information:

Volunteers need to have an awareness and empathy for the emotional, physical and psychological impact that chemotherapy treatments can have on the client and their family. You will also need to exercise strict confidentiality when listening to sensitive or difficult conversations and being compassionate and caring when needed.
