Social Media Manager

Community Gardens Australia

About Community Gardens Australia

Community Gardens Australia (CGA) is the national peak body supporting, connecting and advocating for community gardens across Australia. We work with hundreds of community gardens, volunteers, councils and partner organisations to strengthen local food systems, environmental sustainability, health and wellbeing, and community connection.

As a volunteer-led organisation, we rely on passionate people who are committed to helping grow the community gardening movement and sharing the incredible stories, knowledge and impact of community gardens across Australia.

Position Purpose

The Volunteer Social Media Manager plays an important role in helping Community Gardens Australia maintain an active, engaging and consistent presence across social media.

Working collaboratively with a small team of volunteers and Board Directors who also contribute content from time to time, this role helps coordinate and schedule posts, share stories from around the country, promote CGA's programs and events, and encourage greater community engagement. The role is not expected to generate all content independently, but rather to bring together contributions from across the organisation and present them in a consistent and engaging way.

This position is ideal for someone who enjoys storytelling, digital communications and community engagement, and would like to contribute their skills to a national not-for-profit organisation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate CGA's social media activity in collaboration with volunteers and Board Directors.
  • Create and schedule approximately 2–4 social media posts each week.
  • Encourage and curate content from community gardens, volunteers, Board Directors and partner organisations.
  • Share stories that celebrate the diversity, innovation and impact of community gardens across Australia.
  • Promote CGA conferences, webinars, training courses, events, memberships and other initiatives.
  • Create simple graphics using Canva templates where required (training and resources can be provided).
  • Monitor comments and messages and respond where appropriate or refer enquiries to the relevant CGA volunteer.
  • Maintain a consistent, welcoming and professional voice across CGA's social media platforms.
  • Assist with promoting national campaigns, awareness days and partner activities.
  • Suggest new ideas to improve engagement, reach and audience growth.

Skills and Experience

We are looking for someone who:

  • Enjoys using social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn.
  • Has good written communication and storytelling skills.
  • Is organised and able to manage a simple posting schedule.
  • Can work independently while collaborating with a small volunteer team.
  • Has basic Canva skills or is willing to learn.
  • Has an interest in sustainability, gardening, community development or not-for-profit organisations (desirable but not essential).

What You'll Gain

By volunteering with Community Gardens Australia you will:

  • Gain valuable experience managing communications for a national not-for-profit organisation.
  • Develop your skills in social media management, digital communications and community engagement.
  • Build your portfolio through meaningful work with a recognised national organisation.
  • Connect with passionate volunteers, community leaders and organisations from across Australia.
  • Help inspire more people to become involved in community gardening and local food initiatives.
  • Receive recognition for your contribution as part of CGA's volunteer team.

Support Provided

Community Gardens Australia will provide:

  • An induction to the organisation and its programs.
  • Access to branding, style guides, templates and existing content.
  • Ongoing support from the Communications Lead or nominated Board Director.
  • Collaboration with a friendly team of volunteers contributing ideas and content.
  • Flexible volunteering arrangements that fit around your work, study or personal commitments.
