The Role

Holding Bay Volunteers support parents and carers entering the operating suites at the Queensland Children’s Hospital. Volunteers help ease the anxiety of a child’s surgical journey by working closely with medical staff to provide information and emotional support to parents and carers.

Key Responsibilities

• Supply information and wellbeing support to caregivers during their surgical journey.
• Fit the caregiver with the surgical gown and hairnet needed while in operating room.
• Provide distraction in the waiting lounge, such as colouring and games, using resources from our entertainment programs.
• Accompany the caregiver and patient into the operating room, providing the caregiver with support while the patient is anaesthetised.
• Offer warm blankets were necessary to families in the operating room or surgical waiting room.
• Escort the caregiver from the operating room, help remove gown and hairnet and place in receptacles provided.
• Show the parent or carer where they can wait while the child is in surgery and supply information on hospital facilities.
• Explain the next steps of the Recovery Room process to the caregiver.
• Ensure blanket warmer, surgical gown and hair net stock is maintained.
• Check and maintain colouring-in and play stock is sufficient and in working order.
• Maintain statistical information in relation to the assistance provided.
