Joey Scout Leader Assistant

Scouts Tasmania

Logo for Scouts Tasmania

Do you love children but are concerned by the effect of too much 'screen time' on their development and social skills?

Do you enjoy watching kids learn practical skills while discovering the beauty and wonder in their natural environment?

Blackmans Bay Scouts are looking for an Assistant Joey Leader to help run their Joey Scout group (5 - 8 years) between 6 and 7pm on Monday nights. Sometimes other nights are substituted for the Monday if there is a joint activity with other Joey groups or with older Cubs and Scouts e.g. visit to Police Academy or beach activities. There will also be a couple of out-of-hall activities (e.g. bush walks) and a weekend camp throughout the year, however the extra volunteering activities are flexible depending on your personal availability.

Scouts are seeking volunteers who are prepared to be reliable, attentive, cheerful and have a can-do attitude - as this is the role model we want for the children. Please note you do not have to have children to be good at this! But you do need your own transport and outstanding communication skills - the kids are doing exciting activities and also learning age-appropriate technical skills – they will need you to be able to respond quickly and clearly with instructions and guidance.

This role would also be perfect for anyone working or seeking work in a childcare or education setting.

#What does a JOEY LEADER do?

Joey Scouts is the first Section of Scouts for boys and girls aged 5 to 8, and it’s all about discovery and excitement! Joey Scouts are part of a ‘Mob’, led by a Joey Scout Leader.

#THE JOEYS:
Joey Scouts are encouraged to express themselves creatively, through games, stories and craft activities. From building monsters and spaceships from scrap, to growing plants from seedlings, learning basic bushcraft skills and all about our native birds and animals, Joey Scouts develop a strong sense of belonging and an understanding of the world around them, while also learning how to share and care and help other people. Some Joey Scouts might even get the chance to have their first sleepover with their Mob, an important and fun ‘first’ for developing independence.

#THE LEADERS:
Volunteer Joey Leaders and Assistants help plan and deliver fun, age-appropriate crafts, games, activities and imaginative play during a weekly 1 hour session on a Monday night during school terms. This role is most suited to someone who is comfortable singing songs, enjoys making stuff (it doesn't have to be perfect!) and has a huge heart for little kids.

#TIME NEEDED:
Approximately one and a half hours every Monday night 6.00-7pm during term times - one hour helping run the activities, approximately thirty minutes (sometimes less) for set-up, pack-up; plus a 1-2 hour planning session at the beginning of every term.

#TRAINING PROVIDED:
Free training is provided, both online (own pace) and over two weekends. Scouts is an accredited RTA and there are optional training paths and RPL provided for a number of Cert III and Cert IV qualifications.
