The program

The Migration Support Programs division of Red Cross has been working with refugees, migrants and people seeking asylum for over 25 years. Our work with refugees, migrants and women seeking asylum in NT is a highlight in our program and one that is close to our heart. Our focus is on connecting these women with the broader Australian community.

In line with the above focus, a series of meetings and workshops has been delivered that involved more than 250 women from diverse backgrounds (each a champion of resilience who is seeking to build a purposeful life for herself and her family in the Northern Territory). Supported by Red Cross staff, volunteers, and other stakeholders these women attended workshops and have learned to make womens' clothing, accessories and to cook. They have worked collaboratively with others to achieve their goal of financial security and the process has been empowering for many. An increase in self-determination has also led to the ambitious plan of organising a Fashion Show and Food Expo.

The Fashion Show will be showcasing the talents of the women involved and women from the multicultural community in the NT. The modelled pieces consist of items that have been created, upcycled, and repurposed in workshops. As part of the celebration of cultural unity and diversity some participants will also be sharing performances that are part of their culture and cultural identity.

To celebrate cultural diversity with delicious cuisine, the Cultural Food Expo will be bringing together cultural cuisine with over 100 dishes from 25 different culture’s to enjoy.

The opportunity

Networking with multicultural communities in the NT and project & event management skills.
