Commitment Regular - more than 6 months
Time required At least 1 hour minimum per week, or 2 hours minimum per fortnight. A minimum of 12 months commitment.
Requirements Working with Children Check Compassionate: Volunteers should have a strong desire to help others and demonstrate empathy towards individuals experiencing social isolation and mental illness.
Reliable and Committed: Dependability is crucial. Volunteers must be able to commit to meeting their "MATE" regularly and follow through on their commitments for at least 12 months.
Patient: Working with individuals with mental illness requires patience and understanding, as progress and interactions may vary from week to week.
Good Communication Skills: Volunteers should be able to communicate effectively, both in listening to their "MATE" and in reporting back to their coordinator.
Non-judgmental: An open-minded and accepting attitude is essential. Volunteers should be able to provide support without judgment or bias.
Confidential: Maintaining confidentiality and respecting the privacy of their "MATE" is a must.
Friendly and Approachable: A warm, welcoming demeanor helps in building a trusting relationship with their "MATE."
Flexible: Adaptability to different situations and the needs of their "MATE" is important.
Positive Attitude: Volunteers should bring a positive outlook and encourage their "MATE" in their journey.
Resilient: The ability to cope with potential challenges and setbacks is important for maintaining a supportive relationship.
Team Player: Willingness to work with the MATES team, attend meetings, and participate in training sessions.
Resourceful: Ability to find creative solutions to engage their "MATE" in various activities and overcome any obstacles.
Respectful: Treating their "MATE" with respect and dignity at all times.
