Social Connection Volunteer- Aged Care

Uniting AgeWell

If you would like to connect with older people in the Eastern Suburbs of Melbourne who are socially isolated, we’d love to hear from you!

This volunteer role offers: -An opportunity to gain experience in the aged care sector -An opportunity to make a positive impact in your community and in the life of someone else -Supervision and opportunities for learning and development

Here is an impactful story of a recent connection:

Mary recently moved from her family home to a granny flat at the back of her son’s house. Mary enjoys being close to her family, but she misses her old community and friends. Her declining eyesight has meant Mary had to give up her driver’s licence, so visiting her friends and doing the things she used to are no longer an option. Mary was feeling lonely, depressed and disconnected from her community, interests and identity.

Fiona was working part time and looking for meaningful ways to fill her days off. She started visiting Mary on Friday afternoons. Even though the ladies have a 30-year age difference they have much in common and enjoy meeting weekly for a coffee and a chat. Recently they have joined some of the craft activities at the local library. Thanks to the support of her volunteer, Mary has started to make friends in her new community and is feeling much more like her old self.

If you have an interest in supporting people 65+ to reconnect with their interests and community please apply!

We offer opportunities in skill and knowledge development, as well as ongoing support and mentoring. Good communications skills and the ability to work independently are a must. Having a driver’s license/access to own vehicle is highly desired but not essential. We value diversity in lived experience, language, skills and abilities.
