Logo for Family Life

Family Life has been helping children, young people, adults and families for more than 50 years. We’re here to support people, build stronger communities and help everyone feel safe, welcome and included. We welcome people from all backgrounds. This includes people from different cultures, people who speak different languages, LGBTQIA+ people, and people with disability. Family Life has Community Opportunity Shops in Bayside, the Mornington Peninsula and Kingston areas of Melbourne. Our shops are busy, colourful places where people donate treasures, find bargains, volunteer, learn new skills and meet friendly people. Family Life began with volunteers, and volunteers are still at the heart of what we do. When you volunteer with us, you get to be part of a friendly team and help make good things happen in your local community.

About the role: As a Volunteer Retail Assistant, you’ll join the team in one of our Community Opportunity Shops. It’s a fun way to meet people, build confidence, learn retail skills and help raise money for Family Life programs that support children, young people, adults and families. You might get to help with things like:

  • Saying hello to people who bring in donations and making them feel welcome
  • Sorting through donated items and helping find hidden treasures
  • Creating neat, eye-catching displays for customers to explore
  • Helping customers with a smile and being part of a positive shop experience
  • Learning how sales and payments work, if you are trained to help with this
  • Keeping the shop looking fresh, clean, safe and tidy
  • Being kind, respectful and welcoming to everyone who comes into the shop

Who will support you: You won’t be doing it alone. The Store Manager or another team member will show you around, explain what to do, answer your questions and help you feel confident as you learn.

What we are looking for:

  • A positive attitude and excitement to be part of a team
  • Being ready to help, learn and give things a go
  • Friendly communication with customers, volunteers and staff
  • Turning up on time and letting us know if you cannot make it
  • Asking questions, listening to the team and being open to learning new things
  • Being respectful and welcoming to people from many different backgrounds and life experiences
  • If you are 18 or older, you will need to complete a Working with Children Check and a police check. These are free. If you are under 18, these checks are not required.
