The Footpath Library is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to enriching the lives of people experiencing homelessness by providing access to quality books. Operating mobile library services in Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth, it is the only organisation in Australia offering free mobile library outreach specifically for this community. The library maintains high standards for the books it distributes, ensuring they are in excellent condition and of meaningful content. Collaborating with other service providers in the homelessness sector, such as Orange Sky and Vinnies Night Patrol, The Footpath Library extends its reach and impact.

Position description:

A volunteer is sought to support a monthly mobile library service at Central West Shopping Centre in Braybrook.

Key tasks:

  • Set up and pack down a table of books at Central West Shopping Centre
  • Engage with community members, particularly those accessing food relief
  • Assist individuals in selecting books that suit their interests
  • Collect two boxes of books from Kennards Storage in Flemington at a convenient time
  • Return the books to storage after the session

Location:

Central West Shopping Centre, Braybrook VIC

Skills required:

  • Friendly and approachable
  • Comfortable engaging with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Able to lift light boxes of books
  • Basic organisational skills
  • Access to own vehicle

Time required:

1 hour per month – from 1:00pm to 2:00pm on the first Wednesday of each month

Commitment required:

Ongoing monthly role with flexibility around book pick-up and drop-off

Other requirements:

Volunteer must have their own car to transport books between Flemington and Braybrook
