Organisational context

The Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC) is a leading advocacy organisation for people seeking asylum in Australia. We are a values-driven organisation that strives to be part of a movement that helps people seeking asylum by providing direct services such as assistance with accommodation, food, case coordination, employment, empowerment, education, and legal services. We campaign and lobby with our sector to drive law reform and policy change. At the heart of the ASRC strategy is the people we serve, and our commitment to ensuring that their voices of lived experience are embedded in all that we do. The ASRC exists for refugees and asylum seekers, and we are in the service of this community of people. It’s important that our work and focus is led by what this community needs, expects, and wants from us.

Our organisational values are: Welcoming, Authentic, Courageous, Collaborative.

About the Team

The ASRC Community Portfolio works to ensure safety, freedom, justice and pathways to successful settlement for people seeking asylum through our frontline humanitarian and resilience services, while our advocacy for systemic change and refugee-led solutions unlocks political and social transformation. Our platform for change and our credibility in advocacy is ensured by integration with our frontline services, which provide the evidence base for transformational change, delivered for (and with) people seeking asylum.

Position Purpose

The Volunteer Workshop Facilitator supports the ASRC’s commitment to centring the voices, strengths, and experiences of people seeking asylum by creating an inclusive and engaging environment within the centre. This role delivers informal drop-in style workshops, such as games, art, and conversation-based activities, to help our members and clients feel connected, heard, and welcomed while they wait in the space. The facilitator helps elevate lived experience by encouraging participation, listening actively, and creating opportunities for conversation and service feedback. A key part of this role is maintaining clear boundaries to ensure conversations remain supportive, but do not move into service advice or trauma-related discussions. The role also involves light planning, basic data entry of member feedback, and short reports to reflect how workshops are going and what members are sharing.

Key Accountabilities

  • Encourage participation and support for members to share their voices, ideas and feedback
  • Create a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment that centres lived experience and insights
  • Plan and adapt simple workshop activities appropriate for diverse backgrounds and energy levels

  • Maintain clear role boundaries and refer sensitive or complex issues to appropriate staff
  • Record basic feedback and insights shared during sessions
  • Complete data entry and short reports on workshop outcomes

  • Uphold ASRC values at all times and contribute to a trauma-informed and culturally safe space
