Hospital Volunteer
Current Volunteer Opportunities available at SCUH, NGH & Gympie Hospital. Volunteer positions are available at several locations in the health service including: • Main Reception • Cancer Care Centre • Emergency Department • Breastscreen QLD (Nambour) • Inpatient Ward
Roles available at SCUH, Nambour and Gympie Hospital.
Typical tasks include: • Greeting and directing patients and visitors • Handing out donated comfort items and activity packs • Assisting with directions and escorting to clinics or departments • Supporting patients using wheelchairs (if appropriate) • Restocking materials and assembling patient information packs • Distributing forms, surveys, and helping with general tasks
Inpatient Ward Roles – Compassionate Companions Based in inpatient wards, Emergency Department and Theatres, this role offers emotional support and companionship to patients who may not have visitors and could be waiting for extended periods of time. Volunteers: • Engage in friendly conversation • Visit ward areas to connect with patients • Distribute activity packs • Offer musical performances if skilled (optional) No clinical or physical patient handling is required.
Specialty Roles at SCUH (Birtinya) These roles are limited and usually available in the afternoons or early mornings. • Theatre Companion / Paediatric Theatre Support Support patients pre-surgery and assist parents or guardians in paediatric theatre areas. • Mental Health Unit Support Participate in social and therapeutic activities such as music, art, conversation, and walks. • Information Rounds Maintain and refresh information boards across the hospital—perfect for those who enjoy walking and organisation. • Radiation Support (Adem Crosby Centre) Escort patients to radiation waiting bays and provide a warm, reassuring presence. • Breastscreen Qld (Nambour Only) Support patients returning to undergo small procedures/ biopsies. Escort patients to waiting bays and provide a warm, reassuring presence. (This role is available FRIDAY only)
Gympie Hospital Volunteer We currently need volunteers in the morning to: • Visit wards and connect with patients • Assemble and prepare inpatient information packs
Hospital Chaplain (Multifaith) All sites (Gympie, Nambour and SCUH)
