Cooper House - Saturday Support Extraordinaire in Aged Care, Chermside

Cooper House at Wheller Gardens Aged Care Community in Chermside is seeking a warm and friendly volunteer to spend some time with residents, either one‑on‑one or in a small group, engaging in activities like watching a movie together, playing a board game or card game, socialising, or enjoying the garden together.

These activities assist residents with socialising, promoting a sense of well-being and encouraging community connectedness. Most importantly they bring joy and create smiles!

Saturday Support Extraordinaire Volunteers can help residents by:

• Stopping by a resident’s room for a friendly chat.
• Inviting residents to join in simple, enjoyable activities like movies, board or card games, social chats, or time in the garden.
• Supporting residents to take part in our rotating Saturday activities.
• Letting residents know what’s happening each Saturday and helping them participate comfortably.
• Advising the Lifestyle Coordinator of any resources needed for upcoming sessions.
• Wrapping up the session by resetting the space and assisting residents as they transition out of the activity.
• Supporting residents by fostering connection, purpose, and meaningful engagement.
• Communicating resident feedback to staff to assist in improving both the activity and resident enjoyment.

This role is suitable for people who have well developed interpersonal skills, excellent communication skills and display a calm and empathetic manner when engaging with residents with dementia. This role is especially suited to individuals who have experience with dementia or are willing to learn how to support and connect with residents living with dementia. Volunteering is a wonderful way to make a difference in the lives of our senior residents while making friends, having fun and learning new skills.

Volunteer hours are available on Saturdays with morning or afternoon sessions to suit your availability. Your volunteering schedule will be agreed upon prior to commencement.

This program is located within the Wheller Gardens Aged Care Community where the residents enjoy a wonderful sense of life, fun, and friendship.

All our volunteers follow a COVID-19 safe work plan and provide proof they have received a minimum of one primary COVID-19 vaccination before they are registered in their role.

Volunteers will also be required to have a current NDIS Workers Screening Clearance prior to commencement. This can be applied for through Wesley Mission Queensland at no cost to you.
