Program description:

The Homework club is a fun and dynamic environment developed by Jesuit Social Services in September 2004. The Homework Club program is run at the Flemington High rise Estate where there is a high population of people from the Horn of Africa region. This community is primarily made up of Somali and Eritrean people, along with Oromo, Sudanese and Ethiopian people. The Majority of these community members arrived in Australia within the past 10 years, as refugees and migrants, seeking a better future for their families.

Position description:

Support school-aged students to improve their educational opportunities through homework assistance in a supportive group setting.

  • Assist students with homework tasks set by their school
  • Help students understand questions and find appropriate answers
  • Support students to complete assigned work in a positive and encouraging way

Location: Djerring Flemington Hub, 25 Mt Alexander Road, Flemington VIC 3031

Skills required:

  • Friendly and genuine interest in supporting young people from refugee and migrant backgrounds in their education.
  • Patience and adaptable tutoring style
  • Strengths-based approach to working with young people to achieve learning goals and build self-esteem
  • Willingness to understand the structural barriers that may impact a young person's learning and engagement with education
  • Open-minded, respectful and curious while maintaining appropriate boundaries with young people
  • Willingness to work in a community setting
  • Ability to work as part of a team of volunteers
  • Strong verbal and written English communicationskills
  • Willingness to undertake other related tasks as required

Time and Commitment required:

  • Ongoing during school terms
  • One evening per week
  • Wednesday or Thursday
  • 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm

Other requirements:

  • Understanding and alignment with the mission and values of Jesuit Social Services
  • Valid Working with Children Check
  • Police Check, interview, and referee check (organised at no cost to volunteers)
  • Willingness to follow organisational policies and child safety requirements
