Through our members, volunteers and staff, the St Vincent de Paul Society Canberra/Goulburn has been serving the local community since 1924. The Society aims to bring about lasting change in the lives of people in need. We provide practical frontline support, advocacy and friendship to the most vulnerable members of our community.
The Role: Vinnies Roadhouse operates a food engagement program from the Griffin Centre, Civic, offering a safe and welcoming environment for people experiencing, or at risk of, homelessness, as well as those facing social isolation.
The On-Call Volunteer role is a casual, flexible position designed to support our regular team during emergency relief situations or when additional assistance is required. Volunteers in this role play a key part in ensuring the smooth operation of the Roadhouse, helping maintain a safe, inclusive, and supportive community space for all visitors.
Responsibilities: • Distribute afternoon tea, including tea and coffee • Distribute material aid, including clothing and essential items through the clothes-giving cupboard • Assist with general upkeep of Roadhouse facilities, including setting up and packing down food service areas, and wiping down tables • Support the kitchen team as needed, including washing dishes and performing occasional kitchen hand duties • Prepare and pack tea and coffee packs • Assist in the food pantry, including organisation and distribution • Build respectful and supportive relationships with companions, contributing to a safe and inclusive environment • Respond flexibly to on-call requests and provide emergency relief support as needed
Skills & Attributes: • Knowledge of, or willingness to learn, safe food handling practices • Resilience and patience in potentially challenging situations • Willingness to assist with cleaning, setting up, and completing a variety of tasks as required • Teamwork, initiative, and adaptability to respond to on-call and emergency relief needs • Strong interpersonal skills to engage respectfully with companions and colleagues
Commitment: This is a casual, on-call position. Shifts are flexible and will be scheduled at short notice, based on the needs of Roadhouse.
