The Boroondara Volunteer Resource Centre is advertising this role on behalf of Friends of South Surrey Park.

The Friends of South Surrey Park meet regularly on the last Sunday of the month and every Tuesday from 10 am to 12 noon, to improve and maintain the biodiversity corridor along Back Creek between Riversdale Road and Union Road.

Tuesdays are predominately spent weeding around native plants and preparing for planting. Sundays generally involve planting, mulching and weeding.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Planting indigenous plants from tube stock
  • Spreading mulch to inhibit weed growth
  • Removing litter

Skills and Experience:

  • No experience is required, only an interest in improving the park environment so local indigenous flora and fauna can thrive
  • Some lifting such as carrying baskets of weeds may be required
  • All equipment is supplied but it is recommended that volunteers bring their own gardening gloves and wear sturdy shoes

Members of the South Surrey Park friends group will train volunteers on how to successfully plant out the root stock and to identify weeds.

Induction session covers OH&S issues when using tools.

This role may suit anyone wanting to meet new people, including retirees, and anyone from the local community who loves nature.

We welcome community groups and local organisations but we are limited to taking a maximum of 6 participants to ensure that we have sufficient equipment and training for the session's activity
