1-1 Shopping Assistant Volunteer

1. Provide one on one support to a visually impaired resident during scheduled shopping outings. 2. Assist with safe navigation within shopping centres, walkways, car parks, and other public areas. 3. Offer guidance with selecting, locating, and purchasing items as directed by the resident. 4. Support the resident in managing bags and purchased items. 5. Communicate clearly and respectfully, checking in regularly to ensure comfort and understanding. 6. Promote independence wherever possible, offering assistance only where required. 7. Maintain professional boundaries and uphold the dignity, privacy, and preferences of the resident. 8. Report any concerns, incidents, or changes in the resident’s wellbeing to the Lifestyle Coordinator.

Training

•Orientation to the facility and volunteer program. •Guidance on safe mobility assistance for people with vision impairment. •Ongoing support from the Lifestyle Coordinator and Volunteer Coordinator.

Time required

The bus trip to the shops is fortnightly on Wednesday afternoon departing at 1pm and returning at 3pm. Volunteer would need to be available from approx. 12:30 - 3:30pm.

• Patience, empathy, and a genuine interest in supporting older adults. • Ability to safely guide and support a person with vision impairment. • Good communication skills, especially verbal way finding and descriptive communication. • Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently. • Physically able to accompany the resident for shopping outings. • Previous experience working with people with sensory impairments (visual impairment preferred) is beneficial but not essential.
