As a Puppy Volunteer, you will welcome an Assistance Dogs Australia puppy into your home from around 8 weeks of age until they are ready to begin Advanced Training (approximately 15 months of age). Co-raising and shorter-term roles available.

Your role is to provide a safe, nurturing home while teaching basic skills, house manners and socialising the puppy to everyday life experiences such as shopping centres, cafés, schools, workplaces and public transport. These early experiences are critical in preparing the puppy for their future role as a highly skilled assistance dog. You will work closely with ADA’s training staff, attending regular training sessions and receiving ongoing guidance and support throughout your journey.

By volunteering, you play a vital role in helping create greater independence, confidence and connection for someone in need.

Key responsibilities • Provide an environment where the puppy receives loving care and a warm safe environment to play and sleep • With guidance of our trainers teach puppies basic obedience skills, house manners, toileting training and to calmly walking on a lead • Socialise the puppy to a wide range of environments and experiences • Transport the puppy to training sessions and approved vet appointments • Maintain regular communication with your Field Trainer • In the event of an emergency be able to take the puppy to emergency care

All veterinary care, food and training support are provided at no cost to you.

Other requirements • Live in our service areas: Greater Sydney, Illawarra, Central Coast, Clarence Valley, Coffs Harbour, • Aged 18 years or over • Not leave the puppy alone for more than three hours • Secure, fenced yard or suitable outdoor area • Regular access to a car • Available for online training, visits (during business hours) and puppy classes • Physically able to walk and handle a growing puppy daily • Willing to complete background checks (including Police Check and Working With Children Check where required) • Complete an interview and property inspection

We are also looking for volunteers in Queensland and Victoria.

Training We support you every step of the way. Volunteers receive: • Comprehensive Volunteer Induction • Ongoing one-on-one coaching from Professional training staff • Regular training sessions and group meetups • Access to a supportive community of fellow Puppy Volunteers • All food, veterinary care and training resources covered

Prior dog experience is not essential — just a willingness to learn and follow guidance.
